House Rules for the Heart of Purity

Romans 7:15–20

15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do — this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

Matthew 23:27–28

27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

The purity of your life is determined by the priority of the Word of God in your life.

Psalm 119:9

How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.

1. Guard our heart with God’s Word.

Proverbs 4:23

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Psalm 119:10

With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!

2. Guide our heart with God’s Word.

Where you look for guidance is where you place your reliance.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Psalm 119:11

I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

3. Gather up God’s Word into your heart.

Job 23:12

I have not departed from the commandment of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my portion of food.
